Forestry Week

For the last 18 years (since 1992), a special forestry week has been organized every spring to promote Estonian forests as one of the most important natural resources in Estonia. The week is dedicated to forests and forestry despite of their status. During this week a variety of activities are carried out all over the country targeted at  Estonian people: forestry professionals, adults, schoolchildren, as well as foreign guests.  Conferences on forestry science, excursions, seminars, exhibitions, contests for children, voluntary work activities, outdoor learning, concerts, contests for chainsaw operators and many more are held throughout the week. Cinemas show special films about forestry.

The purpose of the Forestry Week is to encourage people to think about the importance of forest throughout the centuries and draw the attention of the general public to the multiple role of forest today: the economic, ecological, social and cultural role. During this week outstanding Estonian forestry people are awarded.

Since the year 2004 the “forest capital” has been nominated. The role of the capital is to promote forestry activities throughout the year and the most important activities of the forestry week take place in the “forest capital”, however, forestry-related activities are carried out all over Estonia.

Every year a motto of the week is selected. One of the most popular campaigns has been “Plant your own tree“ launched in 2006. In 2012 the motto of the forestry week “Full of forest power” was inspired by the motto of the town of Rakvere “Full of power” to draw the attention to the power of forests.

The EPFU is an active organization responsible for carrying out various events targeted at private forest owners.

The main organizer of the forestry week is the Estonian Society of Foresters. More information about this and last year’s programmes can be foundhere.
